Happy Earth Day! In honor of this special day in which we take time to celebrate the planet we live on (and that gives us so much!) I put together a list of sustainable fashion brands that are doing their part in keeping the environment clean. I love fashion (and I’m guessing if you’re reading this, you probably love fashion too) but let’s face it, fashion is not great for the environment. It creates a ton of waste, uses massive amounts of water and energy, and causes pollution in rivers and oceans. Not good! But many apparel companies are starting to take steps to be more environmentally friendly, like the five I’ve listed below, so you can shop guilt-free (well mostly).
Matt & Nat
Matt & Nat, which stands for MAT(T)erial and NATure, is a brand that offers high quality vegan handbags. They believe in making products that are kind to animals and kind to the environment. Why is vegan leather better for the environment than real leather, you ask? Because unfortunately factory farming is just not sustainable (Cowspiracy is a great documentary if you’re interested in learning more about the subject) and the leather tanning process also causes environmental pollution. In addition to using earth friendly materials, the company also uses recycled nylon, cork, and rubber in their products. Read more about their ethics here.

Angela Roi
Angela Roi (featured in photo above) is another great handbag company that uses high quality, vegan leather. The company takes great care in making each product so they are designed to look beautiful and last a long time. More info on the company here.

People Tree
People Tree is an all around great company that focuses on sustainability and fair trade. Their website states: “We promote natural and organic cotton farming. And we avoid using damaging chemicals in production (where possible, we use recycled and biodegradable substances instead). Also, we try to recycle everything we can, and always aim to protect water supplies and forests in the environments we work in.” Sounds good to me! Read more about the company here.

AG Jeans
AG Jeans is a high quality denim company that focuses on quality over quantity. The company uses Ozone Technology, “which cuts water consumption by 50 percent while minimizing the use of chemicals and energy.” They are also big on using recycled materials or eco-friendly materials like Tencel and Modal, and reduce textile waste by using fabric yardage efficiently. H&M Conscious
While H&M is definitely a major fast-fashion company, they are taking steps in reducing their carbon footprint. They aim to mainly use renewable energy when making their products, and they started a recycling program in which they offer their customers a discount if they bring in their used clothing to be recycled. On top of that, their Conscious line uses eco friendly materials like organic cotton, recycled polyester and rubber, and Tencel. Learn more about what they do to be more sustainable here.

Bonus: Your local thrift store! Thrifting is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and it’s tons of fun! One of my favorite ways to spend a Saturday is wandering through my favorite thrift stores. There are so many pre-loved gems waiting to be found by the right person who will bring new life into it. Plus most thrift stores have everything from clothing and accessories, to home goods, to books and games, so it’s a one-stop shop!
Did anyone do anything special to celebrate mother nature today? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
